A man has been killed after being hit by the light rail near Sydney‘s CBD.

The man was run over by a light rail carriage on Devonshire Street, in Surry Hills, at about 1.15pm on Thursday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and discovered the man, believed to be in his 40s, trapped under a light rail carriage.

Paramedics did their best to treat the man but he died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

‘Police established a crime scene and an investigation into the cause of the incident has commenced,’ NSW Police said in a statement.

‘A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.’

Photos from the scene showed paramedics focused operations between two carriages.

Several specialised emergency personnel attended the incident, including intensive care paramedics.

Witnesses Robin and Stella recalled seeing commuters running from the scene.

‘There was a crowd coming down Devonshire and then sirens blaring up here,’ Robin said.

‘We didn’t hear nothing, didn’t see nothing, but with the amount of security personnel, fire engines and rescue cops, we figured it was something bad.

‘Probably about 100 people just started running and saying, ‘Don’t go up there’.’

Another witness, who was working on a nearby rooftop, said he saw the deceased man after hearing a loud commotion.

‘I heard a bit of a commotion. I just looked down and thought somebody’s dog had run underneath or something. There was a bloke’s f***ing leg sticking out,’ he told the Daily Telegraph.

Daily Mail Australia understands the body has been removed from the scene.

The network has been shut down all the way to Moore Park in the city’s east, with commuters urged to expect delays for at least an hour from 3pm.

Transport for NSW said L2 and L3 services were affected.
