Jamie Carragher works with Sky Sports as a football pundit
Former English footballer Jamie Carragher has expressed concern over the inclusion of Chelsea Football Club (CFC) in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
The Sky Sports pundit noted that the criteria for selecting teams are problematic, especially considering the fact that The Blues won the trophy in 2021 with a stronger team at that time.
However, the current team has a completely different set of players and officials compared to their title-winning squad.
Carragher questioned FIFA over the criteria they use for team participation in the tournament, which includes previous winners of the competition within a specific period.
“The reason [Chelsea] are in it [Club World Cup] is because you won the Champions League four years ago. How many players or managers are still the same? It just feels weird to me.
“This team is in the Club World Cup because of the team that was here, and none of them are playing for the club,” the ex-Liverpool defender said, as shared by CFC-Blues on X.
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 15 to July 13 in the United States of America.
Thirty-two teams will compete for the trophy, with teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and Manchester City all participating in the tournament.
The winner is expected to earn over €100 million, with participating teams pocketing huge bonuses.
