The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has referred seven nominees to the Supreme Court to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report, in accordance with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution.

The nominees, appointed by President John Dramani Mahama, are Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.

During proceedings in Parliament on Tuesday, May 27, Speaker Bagbin tasked the leadership of the Judiciary Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to join the Appointments Committee in vetting the nominees.

This move follows President Mahama’s submission of the list to the Council of State for consideration, as required by the Constitution, after which the Appointments Committee will conduct public consultations and report its recommendations to Parliament.

The Appointments Committee, chaired by the First Deputy Speaker and with the Minority Leader as Ranking Member, comprises key parliamentary leadership figures and members selected based on party strength.

It reviews presidential nominations for high-level positions, including Supreme Court Justices, and makes approval decisions by consensus or vote.
