As the football season winds down, the countdown to pre-season tours begins, that special time when clubs trade intense league pressure for training camps, sponsor obligations, and, sometimes, the downright absurd.

While modern pre-season friendlies have become carefully curated marketing machines, designed to grow fanbases from Japan to Los Angeles, history has shown us that not every summer fixture goes according to plan. In fact, some of them feel like they were dreamed up by a tipsy FIFA video game generator.

So, with clubs around the world preparing for their next off-season adventures, we are looking back at some of the strangest pre-season friendlies in football history, the kind of matches that make you ask, “Wait, that actually happened?”

    1. Walsall 2–1 Ajax Amsterdam (2018)

At the humble Bescot Stadium, third-tier Walsall pulled off what seemed like an alternate-reality result, beating Dutch giants Ajax. While Walsall would later be relegated, Ajax rode the shock loss into a golden run, eventually reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Andy Cook’s two goals that day became the stuff of Saddlers legend.

    1. Bournemouth 0–6 Real Madrid (2013)

When Cristiano Ronaldo, Di Maria, and Casemiro trotted out onto Bournemouth’s pitch, Cherries fans must have thought they were dreaming. Then in the Championship, Bournemouth were blown away 6-0—but the spectacle was unforgettable. A pre-season mismatch? Yes. A memory to cherish? Absolutely.

    1. BG Pathum United 4–0 Borussia Dortmund (2024)

You’d expect the Champions League finalists to have a routine day against a Thai league side. Instead, Dortmund were run ragged by BG Pathum United in a shocking 4-0 drubbing. It was new manager Nuri Şahin’s debut on the bench—a baptism of fire that no one in Bangkok will forget.

    1. Fluminense U23 0–0 Exeter City (2014)

In a poetic nod to football history, Exeter City revisited Brazil a century after facing the Seleção in their first-ever match in 1914. This time, they drew 0-0 against Fluminense’s U23s in Rio. It wasn’t about goals—it was about legacy, memory, and football diplomacy.

    1. Juventus 1–1 Notts County (2011)

Notts County are the reason Juventus wear black and white stripes. So when the Italians opened their new stadium, they invited the English League One side for a friendly. It ended 1-1, but more than that, it was a celebration of heritage—a rare case of the giants showing respect to their roots.

    1. Shrewsbury Town 0–3 Galatasaray (2013)

In between Emirates Cup duties, Galatasaray made an unexpected detour to Shropshire. Fans at Greenhouse Meadow were treated to Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder showing their class against League One’s Shrewsbury Town. Sneijder even bagged a goal—because why not?

    1. Hibernian 0–6 Barcelona (2008)

Hibs fans turned up to see a new-look Barcelona. What they witnessed instead was the official launch of the Pep Guardiola era—complete with tiki-taka domination. Four goals flew in within the first 30 minutes. It was a mauling, but a beautiful one that foreshadowed Barça’s historic six-trophy season.

    1. FC United of Manchester 0–1 Benfica (2015)

To open their new stadium, Broadhurst Park, fan-owned FC United welcomed Portuguese heavyweights Benfica. Despite the scoreline, the day wasn’t about results—it was about identity, spirit, and showing that football still belongs to the people.

    1. Club Brugge vs. Otelul Galati (2013)

This match almost didn’t happen. Set to be played at non-league Radcliffe Borough’s stadium, Brugge pulled out, citing safety concerns with the pitch. A last-minute solution saw the game moved to a luxurious golf course pitch built for Germany during Euro ‘96. Yes, fans watched from golf buggies.

    1. Real Madrid vs. Plymouth Argyle (2006)

When two clubs book the same Austrian training camp, someone has to give. Plymouth stepped aside for Fabio Capello’s Madrid, but were rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime friendly against Los Blancos. The Pilgrims narrowly lost, but the tale lives on in club folklore.
