Ghanaian rapper Lyrical Joe has stated that he is not interested in being compared to award-winning rapper Sarkodie.
Speaking in an interview on Onua Showtime, Lyrical Joe explained that such comparisons are unnecessary and even uncomfortable.
According to him, Sarkodie has already carved his path and achieved his goals in the music industry, and it’s not his aim to chase that.
“I mean it’s kind of not an aim; it’s not something anyone should want to achieve because Sarkodie has done his thing and he has achieved what he wants,” Lyrical Joe stated.
He pointed out that anytime the topic of Sarkodie comes up, it often becomes controversial and leads to misunderstanding.
“And the Sarkodie topic is very, very complicated and you definitely end up offending some people,” he added.
Lyrical Joe also questioned the motive behind such comparisons. He asked whether people are comparing him to Sarkodie based on his success, how long he’s been in the music industry, or something else entirely.
“What are you comparing me to the person for? Is it the person’s success or his longevity in the game or what?” he asked.
While he acknowledged that discussions around rap prowess are welcome, he emphasised that comparing everything else doesn’t make sense.
“You can’t do that comparison because he has his years on him. Well, if you want to talk about rap prowess, we can all talk because he’s a rapper so definitely if it’s rap prowess, we can talk about that,” he explained.
He stressed that comparisons should be clear and specific, rather than lumping everything together.
“So anytime you compare him, what are you comparing? Is it the person as a whole, his success? Or you’re talking about just rap prowess? We should be able to differentiate that,” he said.
Lyrical Joe ended the conversation by stating that he does not enjoy being drawn into such discussions.
“So, I don’t really like that conversation,” he concluded.
