Tensions exploded at Chase Stadium on Sunday, May 18, 2025, as Lionel Messi led a group of Inter Miami players in confronting the referee following a humiliating 3–0 defeat to Orlando City in the Florida derby.

The Argentine superstar, visibly frustrated, approached the match official at full time, flanked by Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, all venting their fury over a series of decisions that went against the Herons throughout the match.

Footage shows Messi animatedly gesturing and speaking to the referee, sparking a heated on-field exchange.

While the exact cause of Messi’s anger remains unclear, it’s believed to stem from perceived missed fouls and inconsistencies in officiating, including controversial build-up play leading to Orlando’s goals.

The flashpoint added another layer of drama to an already disastrous night for Inter Miami, who have now suffered back-to-back defeats and look shaky in the MLS standings.

With one win from their last seven games in all competitions, Inter Miami have slipped to sixth in the Eastern Conference, with Orlando leapfrogging them.

Miami have also conceded 20 goals in their last seven games, with their only victory coming against the New York Red Bulls on May 3.
