Okudzeto Ablakwa during a meeting with some UAE diplomats Okudzeto Ablakwa during a meeting with some UAE diplomats

Ghana and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have taken a significant step in strengthening their bilateral relations following a successful two-day official visit by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to the UAE.

Ablakwa revealed this in a post on his X handle on May 13, 2025.

The visit, which concluded on May 13, 2025, resulted in the signing of an agreement to initiate the first-ever high-level political consultations between the two nations.

According to the minister, he was warmly received by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The two leaders discussed avenues to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including economy, trade, investment, and energy.

Ablakwa added that he held constructive meetings with Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State; Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs; and other key officials where they focused on fostering partnerships that align with Ghana’s national development goals.

“A significant outcome was the signing of an agreement to commence the first ever high-level political consultations in the strategic interest of both countries,” he said.

According to Ablakwa, a notable outcome of the visit was the commitment from UAE companies to explore investment opportunities in Ghana across essential sectors of the economy.

“We obtained commitments from UAE companies who will be arriving in Ghana over the next few weeks to invest in sectors such as renewable energy, AI, education, health, aviation and defense — consistent with President Mahama’s declaration that Ghana is open for business again,” he added.

Additionally, the two countries discussed plans to facilitate the export of skilled Ghanaian labor to the UAE and to collaborate on establishing a new national airline for Ghana.

“Massive job openings in UAE will soon be announced for the Ghanaian youth when we finalize our CEPA negotiations shortly,” he said.

Both nations acknowledged the success of the bilateral engagements, describing them as historic and a significant milestone in Ghana-UAE relations.

Minister Ablakwa expressed gratitude to Ghana’s diplomats and members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament for their contributions to the accomplishments of the visit.

The establishment of high-level political consultations and the commitment to mutual investment mark a new chapter in the strategic partnership between Ghana and the UAE, promising enhanced cooperation and shared prosperity for both countries.
