Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has called for a non-partisan approach to tackling illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking in on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Nana Obiri Boahen stated that illegal mining should not be politicized, noting that both the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP have failed to adequately address the menace.

“Illegal mining is not a partisan matter. It is a general problem we are facing as a country,” he said.

He stressed that not all mining activities are illegal and expressed concern over the tendency to label licensed miners as galamsey operators.

“When someone has a license to mine, why do we describe the person as an illegal miner?” he questioned, urging the public and media to make clear distinctions.

Reflecting on the political landscape, the lawyer criticized both major parties for their inconsistency in addressing the issue.

“When the NPP was in power, the opposition was loud in fighting galamsey, even calling for a state of emergency. Now that the NDC is in power, the problem persists, yet they have not declared a state of emergency,” he said.

Nana Obiri Boahen noted that the NDC has been in office for over 120 days, yet the government has not taken decisive emergency action against illegal mining, raising concerns about the sincerity of political leaders.

“This should let Ghanaians know that our democracy is untruthful and dishonest,” he remarked.
