The recent passing of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Mamponghene, has renewed attention on the Mamponghene’s significant role as the occupant of the Silver Stool in the Ashanti Kingdom.

The Silver Stool, a symbol of immense traditional authority, designates the Mamponghene as the second-in-command to the Asantehene, the occupant of the Golden Stool, in the Ashanti hierarchy.

Rooted in Ashanti history, the Silver Stool represents the Mampong Traditional Area’s pivotal role within Asanteman.

According to historical accounts, the Mamponghene’s authority dates back to the early formation of the Ashanti Kingdom under Osei Tutu I, its founder, when Mampong emerged as a key ally in consolidating Asante power.

The Silver Stool, distinct from the Golden Stool, signifies the Mamponghene’s responsibility to act on behalf of the Asantehene in critical matters of custom and governance, particularly in the Asantehene’s absence.

As the Ashanti Kingdom expanded, Mampong became a vital administrative and military stronghold. The Mamponghene’s position as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs further affirms the authority of the occupant of the Mampong stool.

Born Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II embodied the prestige of the Silver Stool during his 28-year reign.

A lawyer and economist, he was educated at Prempeh College and the University of Ghana, Legon, and served as Registrar of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) before his enstoolment on August 25, 1996.

His ascension followed his uncle, Nana Atakora Amaniampong II, and ended nearly two decades of chieftaincy disputes, restoring stability to Mampong.

Known for his diplomacy and commitment to development, Daasebre sponsored education for needy students and fostered peace in the Mampong Traditional Area.

He passed away on April 20, 2025, at age 86, after a short illness, with his death formally announced to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on April 28, 2025, in line with Asante custom.

The Asantehene has directed that Daasebre Osei Bonsu II’s burial be organized within three weeks, with the one-week observation set for May 12, 2025.
