A high school lacrosse player from Ohio died Thursday from injuries suffered during a game earlier this week. He was just 16.

Dylan Veselic, a sophomore at Bay High School near Cleveland, was reportedly rushed to the hospital in an ambulance before being flown by helicopter to another center, where he underwent emergency surgery.

It has been reported that the 16-year-old was struck by the ball in the back of the head Tuesday. He remained in a critical condition through Wednesday before his family confirmed his death in a statement Thursday.

‘With heavy hearts, the Veselic family shares the news that Dylan has passed away from injuries suffered during a lacrosse game,’ they wrote.

‘We are deeply touched by the overwhelming support and kindness shown by our community and beyond.

‘We ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.’

According to WKYC, tragedy struck during the game against Olmsted Falls, when Veselic attempted to block a shot from a rival player. The ball is said to have struck him on the back of the head, just below his helmet.

It comes just weeks after a high school player in Minnesota was hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury after being struck in the head by a ball during lacrosse practice.

In a statement from Matt Spellman and the Bay High School Athletic Department, Veselic was described as ‘an amazing student athlete, always wearing a smile on his face while supporting his fellow teammates.

‘He was kind, hardworking, and dedicated, consistently showing leadership, empathy, and a positive attitude both on the field and in the classroom.

‘Dylan’s enthusiasm, determination, and willingness to help others made him a role model for his peers.’

Bay High School boys’ lacrosse game at Keystone – slated for Thursday – was canceled, while counseling is being offered to ‘students, staff and family who need support’ in light of the tragedy.

Across Bay Village, families have been placing lacrosse sticks on their front porches to remember Veselic.

A ‘Meal Train’ for the Veselic family has also been set up, with $72,766 raised as of Thursday night. The initial goal was $500.
