Hiplife legend and MMA fighter, Reggie Rockstone
Ghanaian music legend and ‘Hiplife Grandpapa,’ Reggie Rockstone, captivated fans with a remarkable performance in a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) exhibition match at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
At age 61, Rockstone faced off against the younger William Addo in the headline bout of the Global Warrior Champions event on May 3, 2025, delivering a display of skill and technique that led to a second-round victory via rear-naked choke submission.
The bout began with a tense moment as Addo landed a powerful kick, sending Rockstone to the canvas. Demonstrating agility and determination, Rockstone quickly recovered, regaining his footing and composure.
In the second round, videos on social media showed as Rockstone capitalised on an opening, executing a takedown and securing a submission hold that compelled Addo to tap out.
Beyond the physical contest, Rockstone said his participation aimed to spotlight Ghana’s emerging MMA scene and inspire the youth.
Drawing from his background as a two-time junior Taekwondo champion and the youngest Shotokan brown belt in his early years, he emphasised the importance of discipline and perseverance.
“If you’ve known me for over 50 years, you’d know I started martial arts before music. I was the youngest Shotokan brown belt and a two-time junior Taekwondo champion.
“Every day is a risk, but this is a calculated one. My goal is to lend my celebrity to build MMA in Ghana and show that age shouldn’t stop anyone from chasing new goals,” Rockstone stated in a post-fight interview.
The event attracted a diverse audience, including notable figures such as Kimathi Rawlings, and served as a fusion of sports and entertainment.
In his closing remarks, Rockstone advised the youth against substance abuse and advocated for healthy lifestyles.
