Nigerian afrobeat artiste, Davido Nigerian afrobeat artiste, Davido

Nigerian afrobeat artiste Davido, has stated that the death of his son Ifeanyi in 2022 forced him into a painful retreat from music and social media.

Speaking in an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden, the award-winning artiste talked about the emotional aftermath of his son’s tragic death in 2022.

Ifeanyi, just three years old at the time, drowned in a swimming pool at the singer’s Lagos residence, a loss Davido stated forced him into a long period of personal reflection and public silence.

According to him, the tragedy did not only halt his career but also shocked the music world. For months, the usually vibrant artiste disappeared from both the stage and social media platforms, leaving fans and peers concerned.

“I knew people loved me, but I didn’t realise how much until I disappeared. The whole industry just went quiet. Even those who troll me were begging me to come back so they could continue bashing me,” he stated.

According to Davido, the outpouring of support during his absence was overwhelming and eye-opening.

The silence in the Afrobeats scene, coupled with constant messages from fans on social media calling for his return, made him realise the magnitude of his influence in the music industry.

“I was seeing tweets like, ‘It’s too quiet,’ ‘Davido come back,’” he added.
