The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts (GAFTA), George Bosompem, has urged the National Communications Authority (NCA) to consider copyright infringements when reviewing television stations’ applications for license renewals.

Speaking on Penpensiwa on AsaasePa, George Bosompem expressed concerns about the unauthorised airing of Ghanaian and Nigerian films by certain TV stations.

He emphasised that such actions harm the creative industry and violate the intellectual property rights of filmmakers and content creators.

“The NCA should use copyright violations as a basis when TV stations apply to renew their licenses, especially those airing Nigerian and Ghanaian movies without consent.

“People will be afraid to lose their license if they realise that showing copyrighted content on their channels can have serious consequences,” he said.

He also pointed out that the Copyright Act (Act 690), was provided for the establishment of a Copyright Tribunal to adjudicate copyright-related disputes and enforce regulations.

However, he lamented that the tribunal has never been operational, leaving a huge gap in the enforcement framework.

“The tribunal was supposed to be set up for such matters in 2005, but it never materialized,” he stated.
