The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, has dispatched a high-powered delegation to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) in an effort to mediate the ongoing strike by doctors at the facility.
Led by Zangbalun Naa Dr. Yakubu II, Chief of the Zangbalun Traditional Area, the delegation met separately with the hospital’s management and the Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH).
In a message delivered on his behalf, the Yaa Naa acknowledged the commitment of the doctors but appealed to them to resume critical services—particularly emergency, walk-in, and specialist care—to help save lives.
“As a neutral facilitator, I will convey your concerns to the Minister of Health and engage him to take the necessary steps to address your grievances. We urge you, in the meantime, to consider the lives that hang in the balance,” the Yaa Naa’s message said.
He also expressed his willingness to help broker a meeting between the doctors and the Ministry of Health to resolve the impasse.
Hospital Management Welcomes Mediation
Speaking on behalf of the Acting CEO of TTH on Friday, April 25, Dr. Salifu Alhassan Tiah, Director of Pharmacy, expressed hope that the traditional leader’s intervention would lead to a breakthrough.
“If there is any difficulty in resolving this issue, the ultimate place we would turn to is His Royal Highness. So, we must accord this delegation the utmost respect and take to heart the message they have delivered,” he said.
Strike Grounds Services
The doctors’ strike, now in its second day, has brought operations at TTH to a near standstill, leaving patients and their families stranded.
Doctors at the hospital suspended emergency and outpatient services on Thursday, April 24, citing “unwarranted attacks” by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini.
The decision followed an emergency general assembly of DATTH on Wednesday, April 23, just hours after the association condemned what it described as inappropriate conduct by the Health Minister during his visit to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit the previous day.
