Accra, April 17, 2025 — The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has confirmed that Abosso Goldfields Limited has initiated legal proceedings against the Government of Ghana over the non-renewal of its mining lease for the Damang gold mine.

The government recently rejected Abosso Goldfields’ application to renew its lease and issued a directive for the company to cease operations and vacate the mining site by close of day Friday, April 18.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, ACEP Executive Director Ben Boakye revealed that the company had notified the government of its decision to seek legal redress, cautioning that the abrupt nature of the government’s decision could harm Ghana’s investment climate.

“They’ve actually informed the government. That’s their right under the agreement,” Boakye stated. “Unless we are saying that the legal processes that are laid out in law are irrelevant… I don’t think that’s a good business relationship for any country to get into.”

Boakye emphasized the need for respecting due process and legal frameworks in such matters, warning that unilateral actions could deter future investors and undermine Ghana’s reputation as a stable investment destination.

“This is something that can be negotiated. You don’t just take decisions based on ownership of the resource without considering legal implications,” he added.
