Ghanaian rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, has been sued by music group Alabaster Box for allegedly sampling their popular song “Akwaaba” without permission.

It will be recalled that on April 8, 2025, Alabaster Box publicly accused the “Too Risky” hitmaker of unauthorised use of portions of their song and demanded the immediate removal of the track “Welcome to Africa” from all distribution and streaming platforms.

The group also requested a full account of all revenue generated from the promotion, distribution, performance, and marketing of the disputed track.

Following Medikal’s failure to meet their demands, the Alabaster Box group has issued a writ of summons, to that effect.

A writ of summons circulating on social media, dated April 15, 2025, captures that Alabaster Box is seeking GH¢10 million in general damages for the alleged copyright infringement.

In addition, the group is demanding an extra GH¢5 million for what they describe as Medikal’s intentional infringement of their intellectual property.

Parts of the summons read, “An award of general damages for the defendant’s infringing conduct in the sum of ten million Ghana cedis (GH¢10,000,000.00).

“An award of exemplary damages in the sum of five million Ghana cedis (GH¢S5,000,000.00) for the defendant’s intentional infringement of the plaintiff’s copyright, brand association with vulgarity, and for diminishing the good mileage of the copyrighted work. Costs, including legal fees.”

Alabaster Box also pointed out that despite their request for Medikal to remove the song from all streaming platforms and provide a full account of the revenue generated, he only edited the copyrighted version on YouTube.
