A man’s hand has been severed during a violent assault on the NSW‘s North Coast.

Emergency services were called to a home on Toormina Place in Coffs Harbour about 6.45am on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old man was treated at the scene before he was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Two men, one of whom is believed to be known to the man, had left the home before officers arrived, NSW Police said in a statement.

Police officers believe these two men were responsible for the assault.

Two women, aged 58 and 80, were also present at the time of the attack.

Officers have confirmed the two women were not injured.

A crime scene has been established in the area where the incident took place.

Officers have launched an investigation into the assault and are keen to locate the two men that fled the scene.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
