Former sports minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has launched a scathing attack on the renovation works carried out at the Accra Sports Stadium, describing them as a sham and a complete waste of taxpayers’ money.

The facility, which has been undergoing a facelift since the ban of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium by the Confederation of African Football in October 2024, was revamped in an attempt to host Black Stars matches.

Workers were seen carrying out renovations ahead of the Black Stars‘ 2026 World Cup qualifier against Chad in March 2025.

However, according to Vanderpuye, the state of the facility does not reflect the substantial sums reportedly spent on its renovation.

He has therefore called on the Sports Minister to commission a forensic audit and a full-scale investigation into the project.

“We conducted an analysis of the so-called renovations done at the Accra Sports Stadium. It’s a sham, a waste of money, and I have asked the Minister to conduct a forensic audit and investigation into the renovation of the Accra Sports Stadium. You can’t call this a renovation, given the amount of money that has been sunk into it,” he told Citi Sports on April 10, 2025.

He further proposed exploring the option of appointing a new management body to take charge of the facility.

“These issues must be addressed. After that, we can come to a conclusion: do we still want to manage the stadium the same way as in the past, or should we explore how we can bring in professional facility managers to handle these assets?” he added.
