The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government is working towards phasing out the double-track system in senior high schools by the end of 2027.

Speaking during a meeting with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) on Thursday, April 10, 2025, he acknowledged that the double-track system was introduced as a necessary response to infrastructure challenges.

“We expect that by the end of 2027, the double-track system will be a thing of the past. To those who believe it should be hailed, and to those who see it as a politically necessary response to inadequate infrastructure that supported the noble dream of expanding access to secondary education — the reduced contact hours between learners and teachers cannot be a desirable academic training model. It cannot be. Therefore, we all need to work together to reverse it,” he noted.

The double-track system was introduced in 2018 as a temporary measure to accommodate the surge in student enrollment under the Free SHS policy introduced by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
