Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has called for deeper cooperation among member nations in response to recent global trade disruptions, notably the sweeping tariffs introduced last week.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Trade & Investment Summit 2025 held at Mansion House in London on April 7, Botchwey warned that the latest economic upheavals have intensified the need for collective action.

“The sweeping tariffs implemented last week shook markets around the world. Some target Commonwealth countries directly. All of us are affected,” she noted, adding, “This is very far from business as usual. And business as usual wasn’t working for the Commonwealth.”

The Secretary-General emphasized that the Commonwealth must position itself as a force for unity and resilience in an increasingly divided global trade environment.

“It underlines why Commonwealth cooperation on trade has never been more urgent—or more valuable. Because in a time of fragmentation, we offer connection. Amid uncertainty, we offer trust. When others raise barriers, we build bridges,” Botchwey asserted.

Her remarks come at a time when member states face mounting economic pressure and shifting geopolitical dynamics. Botchwey’s call signals a renewed push for solidarity, innovation, and policy alignment across the 56-nation bloc.
