The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take proactive measures to clarify allegations of drug trafficking into the country.

The group noted that if security agencies fail to properly investigate the allegations, Ghana could be perceived by the international community as a corridor for narcotics trafficking.

They emphasised that Ghana cannot become a hub for drug trafficking, considering the negative repercussions on its citizens and the potential damage to the country’s international reputation.

In a statement released on April 6, 2025, CDM warned that a lack of appropriate action could undermine investor confidence and lead to diplomatic tensions.

“Any hint of complicity, silence, or obstruction risks portraying Ghana as a permissive corridor for transnational criminal operations. Such a perception could have severe consequences, including loss of international investor confidence, heightened scrutiny of Ghanaian cargo and travelers abroad, and potential diplomatic strains, particularly with countries whose anti-narcotic agencies monitor global air traffic,” portions of the statement read.

The group also urged the government to allow security agencies to release documentation related to the flight, so it can be scrutinised by Parliament and international observers for the sake of transparency.

“We, therefore, advise the Government of Ghana, particularly the National Security and Civil Aviation Authorities, to publicly release all relevant flight, cargo, and clearance documentation and allow Parliament and international observers, if necessary, to review the facts. The people of Ghana demand the truth, not half-truths and political showmanship,” the statement added.

Earlier, the Assin South MP, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, demanded a security briefing regarding two aircraft, AirMed Flight N823AM and Cavok Air Antonov An-12B, which he alleged carried cocaine and cash into the country.

This prompted President John Dramani Mahama to order an investigation into the matter.
