Black Stars midfielder Daniel Kofi Kyere has admitted that playing against Brazilian superstar Neymar in 2022 was an unreal experience.
Kyere featured in the Black Stars’ pre-World Cup friendly against Brazil in September 2022.
Reflecting on the moment, he revealed that he grew up idolising Neymar and modelling his game after the former Barcelona star, which made him nervous.
“Playing against my idol, Neymar Jr., was nothing short of surreal. The experience was a blend of excitement, respect, and a little bit of nervous energy,” he told Rolling Stone.
“Facing someone whose skills and flair I’ve admired for years pushed me to elevate my own game. It was a respectful duel on the field—a reminder that even our heroes are human, and every challenge is an opportunity to learn.”
The match marked Kyere’s 13th appearance in a Black Stars jersey. He played seven minutes, coming on as a second-half substitute.
The Black Stars lost the game 3-0 at the Stade Océane in France.
