    A man shares how he was narrowly scammed out of ₦135,000 when fraudsters impersonating his neighbour had asked him to transfer the money via WhatsApp.

    The man shared the story in an X (Twitter) post, narrating how his neighbor’s WhatsApp had supposedly been hacked by scammers, who then tried defrauding various people on the neighbour’s contact, with one person falling victim.

    He explained that on Saturday he had been contacted by his neighbour through WhatsApp, who requested he send 135,000 to an unknown account because he had been unable to access his own.

    Busy at the time, he asked his wife to help him perform the transaction, but before she could do so, the man decided to contact his neighbour just to confirm.

    This turned out to be the right decision because after repeatedly calling the neighbour on WhatsApp and normal calls without getting an answer, he realized things were not as they seemed.

    The neighbour eventually called him back, frantically warning him not to proceed with the transaction, as his WhatsApp had been hacked. He explained the situation and even informed him another neighbour of theirs had already sent over the ₦135,00.

    The full story;

    “Sometimes, it’s good to be broke.

    On Saturday, I received a message from my neighbor asking me to send ₦135,000 to an account because he couldn’t access his own. I agreed and quickly handed my phone to my wife to make the transfer, as I was busy at that moment.

    But just as I gave her the phone, I took it back to call my neighbor and confirm. Honestly, I don’t even know why I decided to confirm. I called him on WhatsApp and through a normal call, but he didn’t pick up. So, I thought, ‘If it’s really urgent, he’ll call back.’

    Minutes later, he called me in a panic, shouting, ‘They’ve hacked my WhatsApp! Hope you haven’t sent any money? People have been calling me—our other neighbor already sent ₦135,000 to them!’

    Omooo, I froze! Imagine if I had walked straight into debt just like that. The scammer kept reaching out to everyone, including me, until my neighbor finally retrieved his WhatsApp after 24 hours. Now, the big question is—what happens to our neighbor’s ₦135,000?”
