    Scores of creative arts stakeholders gathered at the National Theatre on March 27, 2025, to participate in the vigil held in honour of the late actor Mawuli Semevo.

    The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, as well as Fred Amugi, David Dontoh, Irene Opare, and several others.

    Prior to the main event, a book of condolence was signed by family members, colleagues, and close associates.

    The attendees then proceeded to the hall to participate in a candlelit vigil that was deeply emotional, with some participants and the late actor’s family bursting into tears.

    James Gardiner, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, delivered a heartfelt tribute during the vigil.

    He reflected on the actor’s passion for the movie industry.

    “Mawuli was a passionate advocate for the growth of Ghana’s film and creative arts sector. His unwavering commitment to storytelling and culture was evident in everything he did. He believed in the power of film as a tool for change. He left an indelible mark on the industry.

    “His legacy will continue to inspire us, and we must honour his memory by pushing forward the vision he believed in,a thriving industry that tells authentic Ghanaian stories to the world,” James Gardiner said.

    During the vigil, veteran actor Fred Amugi, along with other actors, performed a sorrowful choral piece to honour the late actor.

    Actress Irene Opare could not hold back her tears at some point when she was expressing her deepest condolences to the grieving family.

    Actress Edinam Atachie, a close colleague of the late actor, was also captured in intense grief.

    Background:

    The late actor, Mawuli Semevo Yao, passed away at the Ridge Hospital on Thursday, February 20, 2025, while receiving treatment for burns sustained in a fire accident.

    A gifted actor was renowned for his exceptional performances in both film and theatre. He starred in movies such as ‘A Stab in the Dark’, ‘Harvest at 17’, and ‘Escape of Love’, among others.
