Elmina Sharks player Jay Asamoah Kola has been suspended for 12 months after assaulting a referee during a Division One League game.

The Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced its ruling on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

Kola assaulted the referee following Elmina Sharks’ 1-0 defeat to Swedru All Blacks on February 16, 2025.

The incident reportedly occurred after the referee awarded a penalty to Swedru All Blacks in the 12th minute.

The decision, which ultimately led to the home team’s defeat, triggered furious reactions from Elmina Sharks’ officials and players, who stormed the safe zone to confront the referees.

A chaotic scene ensued, with blows exchanged in the melee, causing a delay of over twenty-seven minutes.

Jay Asamoah Kola was caught on camera manhandling the center referee amid the brawl.
