As Ghana continues to mark the month of March as Ghana Month, 100-year-old World War II veteran Joseph Ashitey Hammond shares a surprising perspective.

In an interview with GhanaWeb’s Etsey Atisu, he recalls the colonial era as a time when resources were plentiful, and everyone’s needs were met.

Hammond fondly remembers free education, affordable living, and impressive infrastructure development during that period.

“Most of the infrastructure from the colonial days has been neglected and gone to waste,” he indicated.

He stressed that if most of the infrastructure had been well maintained, Ghana would have been far more developed compared to now.

“The money used for the new construction of some infrastructure could have been channeled into other equally important projects,” he stated.

His story offers a unique glimpse into Ghana’s past, contrasting with the country’s current challenges.
