Former Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien has clarified that he did not reject a coaching role, instead, he felt he needed more experience before taking up such a position.

Speaking with Sporty FM, the FC Nordsjaelland technical team member confirmed the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) interest, revealing that Black Stars coach Otto Addo and GFA President Kurt Okraku approached him about the role.

“I would not say I refused, but I was just not ready for that job. I was approached by Otto Addo and the president [Kurt Okraku], but I felt I was not ready,” he explained.

Essien completed his UEFA License A coaching course in 2023 and is currently serving as an assistant manager at FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark.

The 42-year-old has been with Nordsjaelland since 2020, gaining experience while working on his coaching qualifications.

In March 2024, Essien was considered for a role in the Black Stars’ coaching staff, but the GFA ultimately chose Otto Addo.

He officially retired from professional football in 2020, two years after ending his international career.

Essien enjoyed a distinguished career with top European clubs such as Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan.

His tenure at Chelsea was particularly memorable, as he spent nine years with the club and cemented his status as a club legend.
