Former Director of Communications for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team in the 2024 elections, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has questioned President John Dramani Mahama over the arrest of individuals engaged in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

According to Aboagye, before the 2024 general elections, President Mahama promised to release galamseyers who had been arrested by the previous government.

However, he finds it baffling that, instead of fulfilling this promise, the president is now cracking down on their activities.

He also called for a state of emergency in the fight against galamsey, arguing that the situation has worsened under the current administration.

“We want the NDC to declare a state of emergency because galamsey has escalated. That is what they told us two months ago. We burned excavators, we arrested illegal miners, we jailed them, and the president when he was opposition leader said that was not the way to go. But today, he is doing exactly the same thing.

“He said on a campaign platform that he did not understand why we were arresting people in the pits and that when he came into power, he would release them. So why is he arresting them in the pits today?” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said in an interview on March 10, 2025.
