Ghana and African football legend Abedi Pele is largely lauded for his unique football style and achievements which saw him win the African Player of the Year Award three times.

However, one major flaw in his arsenal, as observed by former Ghana midfielder, Prince Polley was his inability to unite the players he led as a skipper.

Speaking during an interview with Kessben TV, Polley disclosed that Pele’s talent and pedigree meant that he yearned for admiration and praise from his teammates.

However, his teammates were not his regular praise singers and that created an unhealthy environment in the team’s camp.

“During Pele’s peak at Marseille, he was one of the world’s top players. However, when he arrived at camp, he became a different person – introverted and distant. As a leader, this was concerning because he wasn’t encouraging or unifying the team.

“Instead, he seemed to crave praise and adoration, which created divisions among us. We’d often sit in separate groups, and this fragmentation didn’t help our team dynamics,” he said.

He further shared how Pele’s leadership style stacked up against that of Stephen Appiah.

“In my opinion, Pele’s main issue was his leadership style. I compare him to Stephen Appiah, who was an exemplary captain,” he further added.
