The owner of the Spintex Knights basketball team, Dr. Opoku-Antwi has revealed that his team was asked to make a payment before being granted access to train at the Borteyman Sports Complex.

Speaking in an interview on Sports Check on GhanaWeb TV, Opoku-Antwi recalled how it took the intervention of Yaw Sakyi, who vouched for his team before they were finally allowed to use the facility.

“We were asked to pay some money. Later, Yaw Sakyi came in, had some conversations with them, and made them understand that these are the people representing Ghana at this level, and they have been doing it all by themselves for this while. The best you guys can do is to come in and help. Eventually, they were helpful in getting us access to play at Borteyman,” he said.

According to Opoku-Antwi, a fee of GH¢5,000 was mentioned, as officials claimed they were unaware of his team’s status.

“The fee that was mentioned was GH¢5,000 per day. They said that’s the charge for anyone who wants to use the facility, and apparently, they claimed they didn’t know us,” he added.

The Borteyman Sports Complex, one of the major venues for the 2023 African Games, features state-of-the-art facilities, including a playing field, modern gymnasiums, tennis courts, a 10-lane competition swimming pool, and an eight-lane warm-up swimming pool.

The facility is equipped to host various sporting events such as basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting.
