Nana Oduro Sarfo, a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, has responded to President John Dramani Mahama’s call for transparency over the government’s expenditure on the Black Stars.

Oduro Sarfo told Connect FM that President Mahama must have received erroneous briefings about the processes of budgeting and expenditure on the Black Stars.

He noted that the GFA, which manage the Black Stars, only prepare the budget and sends it to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for expenditure.

He averred that if the president and Ghanaians want accountability about expenditure on the Black Stars, the ministry is the place for them to direct their demands.

“The President has been misled in making that statement. The GFA does not spend on the Black Stars. The FA submits the budget for approval, and once approved, the Ministry handles all financial matters. If Ghanaians seek accountability, they should direct their concerns to the Ministry,” he stated.

His comments follow an order by President Mahama for complete transparency relative to expenditure on the Black Stars and other national teams.

Delivering the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025, President Mahama stated that the budgets of the various national teams would no longer be held in secret.

President Mahama assured that no association would withhold their budgets, emphasizing that taxpayers have the right to know how funds are allocated.

“There will be no secrecy on how much the government spends on the national teams. The budgets presented by the GFA and other associations must be known by the public. After all, it’s the taxpayers’ funds that are used to fund these activities.”
