Australians in every state and territory are set to sweat during the final week of summer with temperatures set to soar above 30C.

Weatherzone meteorologist Anthony Sharwood said a high pressure system over the Great Australian Bight was behind the burst of warm weather.

The system is set to push eastward as northerly winds circulating around it drag hot and dry air southwards, causing temperatures to soar in the southeast.

Aussies on the east coast will enjoy temperatures in the mid-30s during the final week of February, before summer officially comes to a close.

Adelaide and Melbourne are forecast to reach 35C on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Hobart will reach 29C on Wednesday, while Canberra will see several days in the thirties, with the mercury reaching a balmy 33C at the end of the week.

Sydney will reach a maximum of 32C on Friday, with residents in the city’s western suburbs told to brace for temperatures close to 40C.

Persistent extreme heat is set to linger in the country’s interior, with maximum temperatures pushing to the mid 40s.

Birdsville, in Queensland’s southwest corner, is expected to reach between 43C and 46C for the next seven days.

Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Alfred off the coast of Queensland is set to strengthen to a category three storm by Wednesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the cyclone’s path remains ‘highly uncertain’ but as of Tuesday the system was sitting about 900km north-east of Mackay.

‘Today and tonight, we expect it to very slowly move towards the south-east and slowly intensify as well,’ meteorologist Dean Narramore said.

The cyclone formed off the Far North Queensland coast on Sunday and has steadily grown in strength as it travels south over the Coral Sea.

The system will reach a category three level on Thursday and Friday before moving south and further away from the state’s coast.
