The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, has received a significant boost to its practical training resources with the donation of a Caterpillar 966H Wheel Loader from Quantum LC Company Ltd.

The company, a leading provider of contract mining services, consultancy, earthworks, and heavy mining equipment, made the donation as part of its corporate social responsibility and its commitment to strengthening the bridge between academia and industry.

The heavy-duty equipment was officially handed over to the University’s Mechanical Engineering Department on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

Representing the Managing Director of Quantum LC, Mr Titus Glover, the Construction Manager for the company’s Tarkwa branch, Mr Felix Awuku, presented the loader to the University.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Awuku emphasized the company’s commitment to the practical training of future engineers, describing it as an essential part of their social contract.

He reaffirmed Quantum LC’s dedication to its partnership with UMaT and expressed hope that the equipment would enhance hands-on learning in the department.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the University, the Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Mrs Grace Ofori-Sarpong Akuffo expressed profound gratitude to Quantum LC for their generosity.

She highlighted the critical role of the Mechanical Engineering Department in the University’s curriculum, noting that it provides foundational training for all first-year students in areas such as Fluid Mechanics, Strength of Materials, and Engineering Drawing.

According to the Pro Vice Chancellor, the addition of the Caterpillar 966H Wheel Loader will significantly enhance students’ understanding of heavy equipment operations before they transition into careers in the mining and allied industries.

The Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Dr Henry Otoo, also lauded the donation, describing it as a timely intervention to address some of the department’s training challenges.

He noted that UMaT has, over the years, produced skilled professionals for key industries, including petroleum and gas, mining, aviation, transportation, the armed forces etc.

He further emphasized that a substantial number of the University’s alumni hold expatriate roles beyond Ghana and even outside the African continent.

Dr Otoo underscored the importance of equipping students with hands-on experience in tools, machinery, and workshop practices to prepare them for the industry.

He also called for continued support from industry players in the form of equipment donations and internship opportunities.

Additionally, he urged UMaT alumni to contribute to the growth and development of the department.
