Aussie football fans have slammed the new playing kit worn by the Matildas at the SheBelieves Cup in the US – and the Socceroos can expect a similar response when they don the strip in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The fresh attire didn’t spur on the Matildas as they were outclassed 4-0 by Japan on Friday morning in Texas – and supporters didn’t hold back on social media.

‘Wow. Not sure what’s more rubbish, the new kit or this Matildas performance,’ fumed one fan on X.

A second posted: ‘We look like tennis balls’, while a third weighed in with: ‘I blame the new ugly kit.’

On the Socceroos’ official Facebook page, fans were equally cutting.

‘Looks like a child designed them,’ said one.

‘They look cheap…remind me of a jersey you may find down at Poppies Lane in Bali,’ posted another.

Despite the negativity from fans online, Socceroos midfielder Ajdin Hrustic is a fan of the game-day uniforms, declaring it is ‘one my favourite kits, ever.’

‘It looks confident, sharp and dominant,’ he said in an official Socceroos clip spruiking the jerseys.

Teammate Kusini Yengi was even more enthusiastic, stating he ‘can’t wait to score goals in these jerseys’ while midfielder Riley McGree felt they were ‘unique and different.’

McGree added they were ‘ground-breaking’ and it will be ‘awesome to represent First Nations people.’

The Nike kits were designed by Indigenous artist Reko Rennie and will be first worn by the Socceroos when they line up against Indonesia on March 20 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney in a must-win World Cup qualifier.

Tony Popovic’s men sit in second spot with seven points after six matches – but they have drawn four of those fixtures.

Incredibly, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and China are all on six points, only separated by goal difference.

Japan are current runaway leaders on 16 points, with the top two nations from the group qualifying directly for the 2026 World Cup.
