The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku has urged sports minister, Kofi Adams to ensure that security protocols in Ghana football are reviewed to gurantee the safety of players, fans and officials.

Awuku raised concerns about the siting of drinking spots close to match venues, detailing how alcohol consumption before matches often leads to violence at stadiums.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Sammi Awuku entreated Kofi Adams to prioritize safety, especially the location of drinking spots around stadiums.

“One of the issues that concerns me is the location of drinking spots near our stadiums. Fans are not allowed to bring alcohol into the stadium, but many consume it heavily before entering. When tensions rise during a game, their judgment is impaired, leading to potential misconduct.

“We must be intentional about what businesses operate around our venues. I urge the sports minister to focus on security, officiating, and the regulation of drinking spots near stadiums,” he said.

Awuku made the comment during discussions about the tragic demise of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley.

Pooley was stabbed during Kotoko’s game against Nsoatreman on February 2, 2025.

The Ghana Police Service have arrested some individuals believed to be involved in the chaotic incident that led to the demise of the Asante Kotoko supporter.
