Former Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has slammed the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, urging him to resign from his post for peddling lies about a staged raid on the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
The Special Prosecutor, at a press conference last week, claimed that intelligence suggested the raid on the home of the former minister—who has been declared wanted for his involvement in corruption-related cases—was staged or carried out by imposters attempting to discredit the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
“Our intelligence points us to state that the purported raid of Mr. Ofori-Atta’s residence was staged or, at best, an imposter action in an attempt to cause disfavor for the OSP and to derail the investigation. The OSP is never deterred by such occurrences, and the investigations will continue as prescribed by law,” Kissi Agyebeng said.
However, it has since emerged that the raid was not staged. The operation, carried out by gun-wielding military officers, was led by Richard Jakpa, who has recently been appointed as the Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat.
Commenting further on the issue while speaking on Peace FM, Fatimatu Abubakar, a politician and lawyer, urged the Special Prosecutor to do the honorable thing by apologizing to Ken Ofori-Atta and resigning from his position for incompetence.
“The OSP publicly told Ghanaians that his intelligence indicated the raid on Ken Ofori-Atta’s residence was staged. He didn’t say it was speculation. He was emphatic that the raid was staged or, at best, an imposter action to cause disaffection for him. The Special Prosecutor has told such a big lie, which has gone viral around the world, even prompting the BBC to publish this falsehood. A fugitive tag has been placed on Ken Ofori-Atta when he has not been charged, his bill of indictment has not been seen, yet he is all over the international media. Meanwhile, the Special Prosecutor has not apologized for peddling falsehood after seeing footage proving that the raid was not staged,” she stated.
She added: “For the Special Prosecutor to remain silent and still have the audacity to continue exercising any authority is just laughable. It is unbelievable. On the basis of his so-called intelligence and the intelligence team that misled him into believing the raid was staged, he should have resigned immediately after watching the footage.”
