A young woman has appeared in court accused of using a disinfectant liquid as a poison.

Paige Myers was arrested after allegedly administering a dose of isopropanol to a female in April last year.

The 21-year-old appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court this morning but the hearing was told the charges were so serious they needed to be transferred to the city’s crown court.

Myers spoke to confirm her details but was not asked to enter a plea at this stage.

The charge against her states that she ‘unlawfully and maliciously administered poison or other destructive or noxious thing namely isopropanol with intent to injure, aggrieve, annoy the alleged victim’.

The incident is said to have taken place in Prudhoe, Northumberland, on April 20 2024.

Prosecutor Paul Coulson made an application to the court to grant Myers bail under conditions until her next appearance, which magistrates accepted.

She will appear at Newcastle Crown Court next month.

Chair of the bench James Thompson told her: ‘Because this case is beyond our sentence powers it has to be heard at the crown court.

‘So we are adjourning this case, or referring it, to the crown court.

‘You need to be back here at the crown court at 10am on the 12th of March. Do you understand?’

Mr Thompson added: ‘In the meantime you are going to be released on conditional bail.’

Myers must reside and sleep at her home address in Prudhoe and refrain from contacting the alleged victim or any witnesses.

Isopropanol can be used as a bacteria killing agent and is often found in antiseptic and cleaning materials.

It is also used to disinfect surfaces and can be found in de-icing sprays.
