Charles Owusu, a former member of the New Patriotic Party, has expressed deep sorrow over the deteriorating state of Awudome cemetery, one of Ghana’s most notable burial grounds.

Speaking on Peace FM, Owusu described the cemetery’s shocking neglect, lamenting the stark contrast between its current state and the well-maintained cemeteries he has seen abroad.

“I am speechless at the deplorable state of Awudome Cemetery. Elsewhere, cemeteries are well-manicured, offering a serene environment where visitors can even bring food to gravesites. But here, overgrown bushes and rampant filth make it an eyesore, despite its location in the heart of the city,” he said.

He further highlighted the factors contributing to the cemetery’s decline, emphasizing how people often forget that they will one day rest there.

“Ideally, this space should be a peaceful oasis with lush trees, well-kept walls, and a dignified atmosphere. Instead, it has been overrun by trash, makeshift mechanic shops, and sheer neglect. It’s heartbreaking, especially knowing that we will all end up here someday,” he lamented.

Owusu nonetheless called on the government to take urgent action to restore the cemetery to its former dignity.

“I urge the authorities and the Minister of Health to prioritize the upkeep of our public spaces, especially those with historical and sentimental value.

To me, cemeteries are sacred and deserve our utmost care. Let us make them a priority and preserve them as part of our collective heritage,” he added.
