A staff of the Ghana Ambulance Service, Simmons Kewura, has disclosed that mass casualties on the field contributed to the delay in attending to Kotoko fan Yaw Frimpong, also known as Pooley, when he was stabbed.
According to him, the ambulance service deployed four staff to the Nana Konamansah Park at Nsoatre to provide medical services. However, the chaos that occurred during the match led to mass casualties.
He indicated that the four staff were attending to the injured persons on the park before they were later informed about Pooley’s stabbing incident, which two of them hurriedly attended to.
Speaking in an interview with Angel FM, Kewura stated that they did their best to salvage Pooley despite the criticisms but it was unfortunate he could not make it.
“The ambulance was around, but the staff were attending to mass casualties on the field. Later, when people were shouting that someone had been seriously injured, two of our staff had to rush to the gate where the deceased was stabbed to attend to him. He was bleeding, so they transported him to the Nsoatre Polyclinic while administering oxygen in the ambulance and handed him over to the medics,” he said.
Kewura further explained how the ambulance service discharge their duties at the match venues.
“Normally, we deploy four staff to each match venue. If we need reinforcement, we add more. At that particular time, the four staff were attending to injured persons inside the park before the deceased’s incident happened outside the field. We were alerted that somebody had been stabbed outside the field, and we rushed to the gate to attend to him,” he added.
This comes after some members of the public chastised the Ghana Ambulance Service for their reportedly delayed approach, which allegedly led to the demise of Pooley after being stabbed.
Staunch Asante Kotoko fan, Pooley was stabbed during a melee at a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman and Kotoko on February 2, 2025.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) have banned Nsoatreman from using their home venue and initiated a probe into the violent incident.
