Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga

Bawku Central Member of Parliament and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has reiterated the government’s firm commitment to establishing the Kusaug Region, underscoring its significance for peace and development in the area.

During an interview on Channel One TV on January 27, Ayariga elaborated on the rationale behind the initiative, highlighting the unique security challenges and the prospects for better resource allocation that the new region would bring.

He emphasised the distinct security issues prevalent in the area as a primary reason for considering the creation of a new region.

“We have a peculiar security situation, and we did an analysis of it.

“That was what led us to consider the establishment of a region to provide a framework to ensure lasting peace,” he stated.

Moreover, the Majority Leader discussed the economic advantages of forming the Kusaug Region.

He criticised the current administrative setup of the Upper East Region, which he believes leads to an inefficient distribution of resources.

“When you send resources to the Upper East, it is big enough and the resources are inadequate.

“But if we split it into two and have the Kusaug area as a region, you are effectively doubling the resources that will go to that geographical area,” he stated.

Ayariga stressed that the creation of the Kusaug Region would not only tackle security issues, but also pave the way for focused development efforts.

“This move is not just about security; it’s about the long-term development of the region,” he affirmed, solidifying his resolve to see the project to fruition and enhance the living conditions of the local populace.

Prior to the coming into office of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017, Ghana had 10 administrative regions, namely Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Volta, and Western Regions.

In 2018, six new regions, namely Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, North East, Oti, and Savannah, were carved out of the ten existing regions by the Akufo-Addo government.

President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress, during the 2024 campaign season, promised to create the Kusaug Region out of the current Upper East Region.
