Rachel Reeves has left people bewildered after she responded with ‘I’m more of a Beyonce‘ fan when asked to name her favourite Beatles song.

The Labour Chancellor was probed with the question by Laura Kuenssberg on the BBC this morning where Tory opposition leader Kemi Badenoch also received a grilling.

Mrs Badenoch’s answer to the question was just as surprising for some viewers as the MP named Yellow Submarine as her all-time favourite.

The divisive remarks were made as Kunnesberg also spoke to the pair about topics like building a third runway at Heathrow Airport and the state of public finances.

Ms Kunnesburg had said: ‘I wonder what your favourite Beatles song is Rachel Reeves?’

The Chancellor laughed and responded: ‘Well, I’m more of a Beyonce person myself Laura.’

Ms Reeves afterwards admitted she ‘enjoyed’ the song Hey Jude.

Meanwhile Mrs Badenoch replied ‘Yellow Submarine’ when asked the same question, with the presenter adding she was ‘sure’ they would be popular choices with the audience.

It is not clear they were all that popular, however, as the answers elicited a number of mocking comments online.

Once person said ‘I cringed so hard watching this’ while a second added ‘Oh my God’.

Another commented ‘Just say you don’t have a favourite Beatles song rather than Yellow Submarine’ whereas someone else alleged: ‘Reeves couldn’t name three Beyonce songs if her life depended on it.’

A fifth person said: ‘Wow. The Chancellor answered a question.’

And another claimed Ms Reeves’ favourite Beatles song ought to have been ‘Taxman’.

It comes as Ms Reeves had named Beyonce as her favourite musician in March last year, adding her most loved song by the American artist was ‘Lemonade’.

Yellow Submarine comes from The Beatles’ 1966 album Revolver and has drummer Ringo Starr on lead vocals, while it also topped the UK singles charts as a double A-side with Eleanor Rigby and was the title song of a 1968 animated film classic.

Other topics discussed in this morning’s BBC interview included the possibility of a third runway at Heathrow, with the chancellor hinting the government would support the idea.

She also spoke about public finances, explaining she did not believe ‘low growth is our destiny’.
