The Member of Parliament for Sunyani West Constituency in the Bono Region, Hon. Millicent Yeboah Amankwah has called on parents and guardians to be vigilant and keep an eye on their wards not to engage in homosexual activities.

The first-term MP made the call when she presented an extensive maiden submission on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, 23rd January 2025.

Mis. Millicent Yeboah Amankwah used her first opportunity to advocate for effective monitoring of children against societal threats.

According to her, it is imperative for parents to be concerned about their children’s whereabouts and every step they take in their respective schools and societies.

“As women, we are much concerned about our young kids and young ones. You see a community with much issues. You must be concerned about what these kids are doing at what particular time,” she emphasized.

The lawmaker made her maiden submission while contributing to the parliamentary debate on the Appointment Committee’s report on the approval of the Gender, Tourism, and Youth Empowerment ministries.

Following concerns about the alarming activities of LGBTQ+ individuals in schools and societies, she believes that the fight against LGBTQ+ practices in the country should not be limited to parents but a national discourse.

She underscored the need to expand infrastructure in schools to reduce overcrowding in dormitories and classrooms.

Additionally, she proposed recruiting enough teachers and supervisors to improve strict supervision and monitoring in schools, deterring students from engaging in illicit practices, including the LGBTQ+.

Regarding the appointment of George Opare Addo, the NDC national youth organizer, to head the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Hon. Yeboah Amankwah expressed confidence in his ability to empower the youth, especially vulnerable women.

She supported Opare Addo’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Protection to address the issue of vulnerability among women due to unemployment, describing their collaboration as essential.

The MP for Sunyani West acknowledged the crucial economic and humanitarian roles women play in the country, emphasizing that women’s empowerment deserves topmost attention.

She was optimistic that Opare Addo’s leadership, once approved, would help fulfil Mahama’s commitment to reset the country.
