Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hannah Serwaa Tetteh has been appointed the United Nations Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The announcement was made on January 25, 2025, through the United Nations’ Facebook page in Ghana.

“Congratulations to Ms. Hannah Serwaa Tetteh of Ghana on her appointment by the United Nations António Guterres as his Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL)”, the post read.

Hannah Tetteh is the 10th person to hold the position since 2011, succeeding Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who served until May 2024.

As a seasoned diplomat and politician, Hannah Tetteh served as foreign minister from 2013 to 2017, where she also chaired the Council of Ministers and the Mediation and Security Council of ECOWAS.

She previously held the position of Minister of Trade and Industry, contributing significantly to the country’s economic management.

In addition to her role in cabinet, she was a Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya West Constituency from 2013 to 2017.

Hannah Tetteh has also been involved in peacebuilding efforts, notably as co-facilitator in the High-Level Forum for the revitalisation of the South Sudan peace agreement.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana and was called to the Bar in 1992.

Hannah Tetteh also served as the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa and as the Special Representative to the African Union.
