The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Dramani Mahama of negligence, which they claim led to the tragic deaths of eleven or more people in violent clashes at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) mines in Obuasi.

At a press conference in Accra, Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communication condemned the wave of lawlessness and violent attacks perpetrated by NDC supporters following the December 7, 2024, general elections, in which the NDC emerged victorious.

The NPP emphasized that despite their peaceful concession of defeat, President Mahama and the NDC leadership failed to control their supporters, who allegedly went on a rampage attacking government institutions, security installations, and private businesses.

“The NDC and its grassroots have ignored calls to stop the violence.

Instead, the violence intensified as if they had seized power through a coup d’état,” the NPP stated.

They listed several incidents where they claim NDC supporters violently attacked state institutions, including:

New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, vandalized by NDC youth. Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), stormed and employees forcibly removed.

COCOBOD offices and Ministry of Energy – attacked and ransacked. Police stations in Ejura and Attebubu – burnt down. NHIA, NSS, School Feeding Secretariat, TVET, and National Lottery Authority offices in the Eastern Region – were forcibly taken over.

The NPP asserted that the deaths of NDC members in Obuasi were the direct result of the party’s failure to control its supporters.

“The silence of President John Mahama and the NDC leadership emboldened these violent acts.

If they had cautioned their members, the bloodshed in Obuasi could have been avoided,” the NPP argued.

According to the NPP, while the party leadership issued half-hearted statements condemning the violence, their inaction effectively encouraged their supporters to continue.

The NPP has called on the Ghana Police Service to launch a thorough investigation into the killings and ensure that those responsible face justice.

“We also want to warn the police not to engage in any backroom deals with the Mahama administration to shield anyone involved,” he stressed.

The party urged President Mahama to ensure justice is served and not to protect any perpetrators within the NDC.
