The Minister of Interior-designate and Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has explained why he allowed his daughter to vote on his behalf in the 2020 general election.

The MP faced intense criticism in 2020 when videos of him taking his daughter to the voting booth to cast his ballot went viral.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 24, 2025, Muntaka explained that his curious daughter only wanted to see how voting was done.

He said that he decided to take his daughter to the voting booth and teach her about the process without considering the legal implications of his actions.

“I’m very fond of Khadija. She insisted she wanted to be here (at the polling station) today (on election day). I told her no, she should go to school. I’m very fond of her – you have many children, but sometimes you’re very fond of one. She said, ‘Daddy, can I see how voting is done?’ So I told her, ‘Don’t worry, when we get there, I will show you.’

“So I brought her with me to vote. Yes, I must admit that voting is supposed to be secret… but knowing that seeing the process and even using her hand to do it didn’t really mean anything other than just giving her the experience of seeing how it’s done,” he said in response to a question by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin on the incident.

Muntaka added that he later realised his actions were illegal and publicly apologised to the people of Ghana for his mistake.
