Ghanaian playwright, George Quaye, has called for action to be taken regarding the recent violence at Obuasi.

On Sunday, January 19, 2025, Obuasi, one of Ghana’s major mining communities in the Ashanti Region, was home to a major ‘battle’ between personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and some youth in the area.

The incident reportedly occurred after a group of small-scale miners allegedly besieged the premises of AngloGold Ashanti’s mines.

This led to an exchange of gunshots between the two parties, resulting in the deaths of seven people.

The incident, which left the country in shock, has seen reactions from various personalities, including George Quaye.

In a post on his Facebook page on January 21, 2025, Quaye called for a conversation to be held over the ‘encroachment’ of mining sites by individuals.

He further wondered if more security should be offered to the mining companies or if the companies should be allowed to defend themselves.

“Is it time we had that objective and dispassionate conversation about locals feeling ‘entitled’ to encroach on extractive sites illegally? Day in and out, we hear similar cases from the Electrochem Site in Ada and other places.

“Should the government maybe offer more protection to these huge investments or should they perhaps take their security into their own hands? Will that end well?” he asked.

The playwright also inquired about the role of local leaders in the situation, noting that failure to resolve such a situation would affect the country negatively.
