The Greater Accra Region has seen a significant surge in interests for the positions of Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), with 420 applicants competing for the 29 available roles.

This was confirmed by Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, the Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), during an interview with Channel One TV on January 20, 2025.

According to Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, the nomination process has garnered a remarkable response, with all 29 districts submitting applications for vetting.

“We have 29 assemblies, and we tasked the constituencies to receive nominations. Fortunately, we have received a total of 420 applications. The vetting will take place within five days,” he explained.

This robust selection follows a directive issued by the NDC on January 2, 2025, signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey.

The directive instructed regional leaders to establish Regional Vetting Committees to oversee the selection process.

These committees are mandated to ensure that candidates meet the constitutional requirements and possess the competence needed for the demanding roles of MMDCEs.

    Guidelines for Candidate Selection

Four key criteria outlined by the party to guide the vetting process includes proof of party membership, constitutional eligibility, diversity and balance, as well as competence and experience.

The party noted that Regional Vetting Committees have also been tasked to include representatives from various stakeholder groups, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive selection process.

This approach is designed to identify candidates capable of steering development agendas that reflect the aspirations of their districts.
