Former Ghanaian player Mohammed Gargo has rejected reports that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) plans to dismiss John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann as Black Stars assistant coaches.

According to Gargo, this move would not address the team’s challenges, as the assistants work based on instructions from the head coach.

The former Black Stars defender argued that most decisions are made by head coach Otto Addo, and therefore, any blame should be directed at him, not his subordinates.

In an interview with Citi Sports, Gargo advised the GFA to dismiss Otto Addo instead of other technical staff members who play a minimal role.

“Whenever a team wants to dismiss its technical team, it should start with the head coach, as they are responsible for the team’s performance. The head coach gives instructions to assistants, who carry out the day’s business, including training sessions and preparations.

“So, if changes are to be made, the entire technical team should go, making way for a new team that can potentially do better. However, it’s unfair to sack the assistants and retain the head coach. In post-match interviews, Otto Addo has taken responsibility for the team’s performance,” Gargo said.

This comes after reports emerged that the GFA plans to dismiss Black Stars assistant coaches John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann as part of efforts to revamp the technical staff.

When the 2026 World Cup qualifiers resume in March 2025, the Black Stars will host Chad and travel to Madagascar.
