Man and wife have appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, for allegedly defrauding an urban planner of GH¢320,000 by falsely promising to sell him land at Ofankor.

The accused, Abass Yaya, 48, and Mamatha Kassim, 52, both traders, accused of conspiracy to commit crime and defrauding by false pretenses, have pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, remanded Yaya in police custody, granted GH¢300,000 bail to Kassim with two sureties, and adjourned to January 28, 2025.

Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, prosecuting, said in May 2022, Yaya informed the complainant, Baba Yakubu Mahama, that he could offer land at Ofankor for sale.

The court heard that Yaya and Kassim led the complainant to the land, which she (Kassim) claimed ownership.

Chief Insp Danku, revealed that Yaya allegedly demanded and received GH¢320, 000 from the complainant, assuring him (complainant) of land and the relevant documents.

The court heard that after receiving the money, the couple went into hiding.

Chief Insp Danku said Mahama reported the case to the police at Nima, and when accused were arrested, they admitted to the offence in their caution statements.

They also confessed to selling the same land to two other individuals and giving the original documents to a third buyer, the court heard.

Chef Insp Danku further disclosed that the accused failed to assist the police in locating the other buyers or accomplices.

According to prosecution, Kassim told the police that she collected the GH¢320,000 from the complainant on Yaya’s instructions.

The woman also said her husband had asked her to pretend to be the landowner and that she  handed the money over to him.
