Ghanaian coach Christopher Nimley has issued a stern rebuke to former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan after the latter sensationally branded his ex-teammates “cowards.”

On Thursday, January 2, 2025, during a live session on his Instagram page, Gyan launched a scathing attack on his former Black Stars teammates for their failure to defend him after his penalty miss in the 2010 World Cup against Uruguay.

The former Sunderland forward also criticized his teammates for not stepping up when the penalty was awarded, describing them as cowards.

However, while Nimley acknowledged Gyan’s exceptional form during the tournament, which made him the obvious choice to take the penalty, he believes that his attack on his then teammates is unfortunate.

“If you look at the kind of tournament he had before that all-important penalty kick, who else would have picked up that ball? So I completely disagree with Baby Jet when he says his teammates were cowards. They were not. Stephen Appiah wasn’t a coward,” Nimley said.

Calling out his teammates wasn’t the only issue Gyan addressed during his live session. The 30-year-old alleged he was sabotaged by individuals within the Black Stars camp, claimed he was left isolated as the team’s captain, and spoke about his strained relationship with Andre Ayew.

The retired striker remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, with 51 goals in 109 appearances. His six goals at the FIFA World Cup make him the highest-scoring African player in the tournament’s history.
